Profile: Craig Kerrecoe

Kerrecoes' work, frequently abstract, invariably focuses on the concept of identity. He seems driven by a desire to understand who he is and what makes him that person. Is he little more than a machine, programmed to function in an extremely specific way? Is his identity just an elaborate illusion, the result of billions of chemical reactions?

We believe his work appeals to others because so many of us, at one time or another, are forced to confront who we really are. We can hide behind a facade for so much of the time but every now and then, inadvertently, we let our true selves show. Kerrecoe expertly taps into the insecurity, the unsettling fear that we are not actually in control of our selves, of our identities.....of who we really are.

'The Code' series of paintings, started in 2004, uses a complex language of abstract colour and pattern, designed to convey Kerrecoe's internal conflict to balance his genetically produced instincts with his sense of 'free-will'.In 2007/8 he collaborated with OC Artist
Esther Appleyard BA (Hons) on a joint project entitled 'A Series Of Lines' which was shown at Three Cups Gallery in Ely during May and June, 2007, and then at the presticgious Worcester City Art Gallery in April/May 2008.
